Obama vs McCain, Interesting Read

This is from Dick Morris, www.dickmorris.com, a political blog I have subscribed to.  I’m still trying to figure this guy out, I don’t know a lot about him, except that he was a Clinton insider in the past, is now a frequent visitor on Fox News, and is not to impressed with Obama.  He is throwing out a whole lot of speculation and opinion there, there is a clear spin on it.  But most of what he says does sound rather plausible.  I particularly liked this:

To sum it up: A candidate who cannot get elected is being nominated by a party that cannot be defeated, while a candidate who is eminently electable is running as the nominee of a party doomed to defeat.

Saying Obama is unelectable is clearly a stretch at best, but he does have some pretty heavy baggage with much of the population.

I agree with most of his advice for McCain, except for one very significant aspect.  He says McCain can “win by running to the center” and that I believe is wrong.  McCain’s best shot is to simply be himself.  Look at his track record, he is clearly not another Bush, not another of those pesky conservatives, he has been the maverick too much.  But he is also clearly not a liberal.

What I want, and I believe an overwhelming number of voters want more than anything else, is someone who is going to be honest with us, and sincerely do what they believe best for the nation.  Character, imho, it’s all about character.

Candidates say some mighty good sounding things on the campaign trail, like McCain promising to not sign a bill with earmarks in it.  That’s going to irritate a whole lot of people in DC a lot.  And it would save a bundle of tax dollars.  But will he really do it, or is it just a campaign promise?  Character.
No, Mr. Morris, McCain does not need to run to center, he needs to run as himself.
